A Fractal Landscape Realizer for Generating Synthetic Maps Ecology and Society
Hargrove, William; Oak Ridge National Laboratory; hnw@fire.esd.ornl.gov; Hoffman, Forrest M; Oak Ridge National Laboratory;; Schwartz, Paul M; ;.
A fractal landscape realizer has been developed that generates synthetic landscape maps to user specifications. The alternative landscape realizations are not identical to the actual maps after which they are patterned, but are similar statistically (i.e., the areas and fractal character of each category are replicated). A fractal or self-affine pattern generator is used to provide a spatial probability surface for each category in the synthetic map. The Fractal Realizer arbitrates contentions among categories in a way that makes it possible to preserve the fractal patterns of all the categories in the resulting synthetic landscape. Each synthetic landscape is one equally likely realization from among an infinite ensemble of possible fractal landscape...

A lognormal distribution of the lengths of terminal twigs on self-similar branches of elm trees OAK
Koyama, Kohei; Yamamoto, Ken; Ushio, Masayuki.
Lognormal distributions and self-similarity are characteristics associated with a wide range of biological systems. The sequential breakage model has established a link between lognormal distributions and self-similarity and has been used to explain species abundance distributions. To date, however, there has been no similar evidence in studies of multicellular organismal forms. We tested the hypotheses that the distribution of the lengths of terminal stems of Japanese elm trees (Ulmus davidiana), the end products of a self-similar branching process, approaches a lognormal distribution. We measured the length of the stem segments of three elm branches and obtained the following results: (i) each occurrence of branching caused variations or errors in the...

Efeito dos ácidos graxos essenciais sobre lipidemia e vascularização da membrana vitelina de codornas japonesas Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Silva,J.E.S.; Moura,A.M.A.; Nogueira,R.A..

Fractal Dimension of Dog Kidney Proximal Convoluted Tubuli Sections by Mean Box-Counting Algorithm International Journal of Morphology
Gil,Julio; Gimeno,Miguel; Laborda,Jesús; Nuviala,Javier.
The possibility of characterizing the proximal convoluted tubuli of the dog kidney by means of a unique and objective value, is an attractive idea in order to automate its recognition in anatomy and patology. For this, we obtained a fractal dimension of the proximal convoluted tubuli in the dog kidney by mean box-counting method. The fractal value we obtained is a flat dimension, and it is different than the line fractal dimension of the dog kidney arterial pattern, which was previously calculated by us (Gil et al., 2006). Thus, from optical microscopy images, we are able to obtain a single quantitative measure to discriminate these dog kidney components. This measures can use to automate its recognition. Fractal geometry provides many advantages when...

FRACTAL SCALING OF PARTICLE AND PORE SIZE DISTRIBUTIONS AND ITS RELATION TO SOIL HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY Scientia Agricola
BACCHI,O.O.S.; REICHARDT,K.; VILLA NOVA,N.A..
Fractal scaling has been applied to soils, both for void and solid phases, as an approach to characterize the porous arrangement, attempting to relate particle-size distribution to soil water retention and soil water dynamic properties. One important point of such an analysis is the assumption that the void space geometry of soils reflects its solid phase geometry, taking into account that soil pores are lined by the full range of particles, and that their fractal dimension, which expresses their tortuosity, could be evaluated by the fractal scaling of particle-size distribution. Other authors already concluded that although fractal scaling plays an important role in soil water retention and porosity, particle-size distribution alone is not sufficient to...

Geometria fractal em física do solo Scientia Agricola
Bacchi,O.O.S.; Reichardt,K..

Morphometric and Fractal Analysis of Injured Skeletal Muscle Tissue Subjected to A Combination of Treatments; Cryotherapy and Therapeutic Ultrasound International Journal of Morphology
Koike,Tatiana Emy; Camargo,Regina Celi Trindade; Ozaki,Guilherme Akio Tamura; Castoldi,Robson Chacon; Seraphim,Patrícia Monteiro; Oikawa,Sérgio Minoro; Camargo Filho,José Carlos Silva.
The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of an association of cryotherapy and therapeutic ultrasound on the treatment of muscle injured by impact. Fifty-five Wistar rats were divided into five groups (n = 11), Acute Injury (AI), Injury (I), Cryotherapy (CR), Therapeutic Ultrasound (TU) and Association of Cryotherapy and Therapeutic Ultrasound (CRTU). The CR and CRTU groups received applications of Cryotherapy three times (immediately, 24 and 48 h after injury) of 20 minutes duration. The TU and CRTU groups received applications of Therapeutic Ultrasound for seven days, for five minutes, in pulsed mode, 0.5 w/cm intensity, frequency 1 MHz. Body mass and gastrocnemius mass were analyzed. In addition to histological slides stained with hematoxylin and...

Tangential Algorithm for Calculation of the Fractal Dimension of Kidney Tubuli Sections International Journal of Morphology
Gil,Julio; Gimeno,Miguel; Laborda,Jesús; Nuviala,Javier; Belanche,Ignacio.
We have developed a new algorithm to calculate the fractal dimension of dog kidney proximal convoluted tubule section. This algorithm is intermediate between box-counting and perimeter-stepping algorithms. The result of this new algorithm and correlations found between fractal dimensions and other Euclidian values of these tubuli, suggest that this algorithm is adequate to calculate fractal dimensions by points
